    ADHD in Adults and Children
  • Recognizing and Treating ADHD In Adults and Children…

You are probably aware that diagnosing ADHD with any degree of certainty is very difficult due to the complexity of the symptoms and the wide variation in individual behavior. And the very thought of having this brain disorder can cause a mesaure of anxiety in both adults and children.

You can well imagine the discouragement the ADHD sufferer may feel if he failed to receive the understanding and sympathy his condition calls for. Especially if the sufferer is a child. That is why it is important to learn and understand much about ADD/ADHD so as to be able to identify a person affected by it and treat them respectfully.

As the name ADHD suggests, the individual lacks the ability to pay sustained attention to the matter at hand so as to complete an assigned task. A restless and impulsive disposition seems to mark the ADHD sufferer, seemingly unable to settle down and concentrate on a given task.

ADHD, as we understand it, is a problem related to the brain dysfunction or limitation as such, that is a result of malfunctioning of its dopamine neurotransmitter systems; It is typically linked with hereditary factors, and this incresaes the probability for a child with a parent or close relative with ADHD to also share the disorder and its adversities. As far as twins are concerned,
ADD has a stronger chance (50%) of occurring in the second child if one has been diagnosed
    with it.

The study of ADHD and its causes has made remarkable advancement. For instance, it was once thought that this disorder was caused by nutritional defficiencies. However this theory has long been dismissed as incorrect. Likewise similar erroneous beliefs ragarding allergies, drugs and bad parenting have been set aside as explanations for ADHD.

By means of imaging tests, researchers have been able to study the brain’s activity and they have discovered a possible connection between ADHD and the structure of the brain as well as the neurochemicals that control impulse and attention. Furthermore, consumption of alcohol and drugs during pregnancy as well as exposure to lead poisoning have been linked with ADHD.

So ADHD is what results when the supply of neurochemicals to the brain has fallen below the correct level,
which simply means proper stimulation to the brain cells is missing and this results in
the brain having to find other ways to release these chemicals. Those with ADHD subconsciously use excessive and impulsive movements to compensate for the defficiency in the level of neurochemicals in the brain.

Perhaps you can see that when an ADHD sufferer finds himself having to perform a task that does not of itself provide enough brain stimulation he can become very restless, tending to do whatever will provide the needed stimulus; therefore tasks like some schoolwork or other low stimulus assignments can cause the sufferer to become somewhat restless, impulsive in an effort to provide the needed stimulation for the brain. The resulting adverse effect on the child can be low grades and rebukes from his teachers. It is a fact that when a child’s inappropriate behavior is readily ascribed to ADHD, much sympathy and support is accorded the child and he can be helped to cope. On the other hand if the undesirable behavior is not seen as linked to ADHD or some other recognized condition, the child can gain a bad reputaion and easily become isolated.

As you can see from this discussion, a clear understanding of the nature of ADHD, its causes, symptoms and treatment is a great aid in coping with the disorder and if you have a loved one with ADHD, you can provide better support for that one. This in turn will enable them to deal with their disorder. For a youngster with ADHD there can be no substitute for a caring parent who is informed.
